What’s the story with South Alabama? Are the Jaguars in the F.B.S., the F.C.S. or floating in the ether between both levels? For me, the answer would mean the difference between 123 previews and 124 — a drop in the bucket in terms of overall word count, but a fairly important distinction nonetheless, if only for my own mental sanity. Here’s the presumption: Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and Massachusetts are full-fledged members of the F.B.S. after spending last season on the F.C.S. level; South Alabama is a “provisional” member. That’s not the case. The N.C.A.A. provides the details.

This week I attended a variety of lectures and learned that Colgate never fails to bring great speakers and presentations to campus. On Tuesday, as part of my Challenges of Modernity class, I attended a film screening of Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinema. I found this avant-garde French film to be rather dense. Luckily, the next day Daniel Morgan, a specialist on film studies and Godard, came and lectured on the content and theme of the film. Thanks to Morgan’s discussion of the film, our class was able to appreciate its form and correlation to what we are currently studying.

Youngsters have been getting creative as part of a campaign to emphasise the importance of regular school attendance.

The city council’s education welfare service asked pupils at Marriott Primary, in Saffron Lane, and at other schools across Leicester to come up with puzzle ideas for a book to make other youngsters think about punctuality and attendance.

The finished book will be made available to primary schools to reproduce in-house so all children can enjoy the puzzles.

Councillor Vi Dempster, the council’s education spokesman, said: “We want to get all pupils involved as an incentive to attend regularly, and so they can be part of something fun.

“Regular attendance is vital in order for pupils to get the best out of their schooling, and we hope to encourage them to attend and take part.”

I’m getting sick of policy talk! I know we have to STOP this corporate take-over of democracy. It’s perhaps temporarily futile, but certainly exhausting, and in some ways boring. I hope to get to Occupy DOE next week. At least the Mike Petrilli response to Alfie Kohn is interesting, and I hope we can both dig into it sometime from our separate perspectives.

I miss the kind of collegial discussion that went on all the time when I was working. There were so many things that excited us and that we shared with each other. Whether it was about what we were studying with the kids, or a particular student’s dilemma, or a fascinating article we had just read. The kids were a constant source of ideas worth exploring also with adults.

The A.C.C. has already announced that it will move to a nine-game conference schedule in 2014, when Pittsburgh and Syracuse were originally pegged to join the league. That may change, however, if the Panthers and Orange are able to extricate themselves from the Big East one year ahead of schedule, as most expect.
