As an accompanying post to today’s re-ranking, here’s the entire F.B.S. conference breakdown in terms of average P.S.R. 1-124 ranking. It’s not entirely fair to include the Independent programs among the true conferences, seeing that there’s only four Independent teams, but it does give a slight slice-of-life taste of where that quartet stands in the big picture. The listings include the average ranking, highest team ranking and number of teams in the top 25 in parentheses. Without further ado:

1. Big 12 (32.6, 6, 5)
2. Pac-12 (40.2, 3, 6)
3. SEC (41.1, 1, 6)
4. Big Ten (47.3, 15, 2)
5. A.C.C. (54.6, 4, 2)
6.

This week, Nikon announced the winners of its annual Small World Photomicrography Competition. This spectacular photo won third place and depicts an osteosarcoma cell. The image was submitted by National Institutes of Health researcher Dylan Burnette, PhD. A recent post on Ars Technica offers a detailed explanation of the image:

The cell is outlined in purple by structures called actin stress fibers, which essentially form a tiny skeleton made of protein that helps give the cell its shape. The yellow spaghetti-like structures are groups of mitochondria, a small structure within the cell that helps convert sugars and other energy sources into the ATP that powers most proteins.

Davis said, “We are just here to have some fun, educate and provide some assistance for families who need help with vaccinating their animals.”

Kirby, the puppy pit bull who, after being shot, had his front left leg amputated, made his first public appearance at the celebration.

Davis talked about his progress, saying, “…he is doing well, he is very lively. He

Let’s run down the issues, because they’re numerous, they’re vital and they’ve suddenly risen to the surface, thanks to U.S.C.’s 21-14 loss to Stanford on Saturday night. There’s the Trojans’ offensive line, which fell apart without Khaled Holmes as its anchor at center. Tied into the line play is Matt Barkley’s inability to handle the pass rush – and this reflects more so on U.S.C.’s front than the team’s Heisman contender under center. There’s the offense’s inefficiency on third down, which went overlooked against Hawaii and Syracuse but stood front and center against the Cardinal. There’s the defensive line, an issue today just as it was in August.

U.S.C. has issues – but each is re

The trademark balaclavas that kept Pussy Riot band members anonymous are now worn at protests around the world.

When Colgate’s new Russian and Eurasian Studies (REST) program promised not only a Russian menu, but also cloth headgear and the titillating-sounding topic of the Pussy Riot phenomenon, they had a winning formula.

(Pussy Riot is the feminist, subversive band whose members have been in prison since March for performing an anti-Kremlin punk prayer” in a cathedral in Moscow. The arrest and subsequent two-year sentence for the group members spurred an international outcry and the band is now considered one of most influential figures on the international art scene.)

The Sept. 26
