RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Jill Alexander Essbaum, an acclaimed poet and writing professor at the University of California, Riverside, has won her second National Endowment for the Arts creative writing fellowship.

Blind squirrels are known to stumble upon a nut every now and again, especially if that nut is, say, Maine’s football team. Or if the blind squirrel is Middle Tennessee State and the nut is Florida Atlantic, which houses the only Sun Belt team more impotent than Rick Stockstill’s Blue Raiders. So what to make of these wins? At face value, dates with Maine and the Owls pushed Boston College and Middle Tennessee State into the win column – that’s the biggest takeaway for both the Eagles and Blue Raiders. Dr. Jeff Mjaanes, orthopedic specialist at Rush University Medical Center, has returned to Haiti to help with ongoing disaster relief efforts and is blogging about his experience in the field. Mjaanes was part of a team of Rush doctors and nurses who volunteered to help with disaster relief efforts in Haiti in 2010 just after the earthquake hit.

Mjaanes has been having trouble getting Internet service during the day, but he just sent us an update and a few pictures.

Wind, cold and snow showers

A powerful cold front has wisked warmth and rain showers to the east and left us in a wind whipped ice box.  Quite the shock to our systems after the sun and 60s of Thanksgiving day.  Winds will gust to 40 mph this afternoon as temps plunge into the lower 30s.  Feels-like temps will deliver apparent temps into the lower 20s at times and we will likely see a few scattered snow showers to add insult to injury.

The cold stays with us for the holiday weekend and the BIG Buckeyes/Wolverines game tomorrow in Columbus. Lo
