The year was 99 or 999, and Renae Eades had just walked into Howard’s Seafood and Convenience Store on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Castle Street, looking for a bag of potato chips.

As she stood there deciding between barbecue and sour cream and onion, a petite, black woman appeared next to her wearing a shower cap, hoop earrings and mismatched shoes.

Jeffrey Crayton Yelverton stuck to his story Friday, the same one he told police the day he ran over a homeless Loaves & Fishes volunteer and left him in the street to die a miserable death that took 55 days in coming.

“Panic just took over,” Yelverton told Sacramento Superior Court Judge Cheryl Chun Meegan. “I took the wrong turn. These gentlemen were in the road yelling and screaming at me. I did not intend to hurt anyone. Fear took over, I guess. The whole event is a blur. I didn’t know what to do. I truly thought they would get out of the way.”

In sentencing Yelverton to six years and eight months in prison, the judge gave voice to the unspoken message delivered by the jurors who last month convicted Yelverton of voluntary manslaughter and hit-and-run in the death of Thomas William “Cowboy Bill” Deollos.

Authorities said Wednesday that the death of a well-liked Davis baseball player and coach, who was punched in the face by a friend on Picnic Day and died, was a homicide.

But Yolo County prosecutors will not file charges in the killing of Scott Heinig, 22.

Though “caused by human hands,” Heinig’s death was “the result of a tragic set of circumstances that do not rise to the level of criminal conduct,” the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

“We have talked to the family of Mr. Heinig, and they are behind this decision,” Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Cabral said.

The details of Heinig’s death were made public for the first time Wednesday, after nearly three months of investigations by the Davis Police Department and the Yolo County Coroner’s Office.

Heinig was a recent UC Davis graduate and university baseball player.

Wauwatosa police are investigating a con man who has called at least six area businesses and tried to trick employees into handing over money by claiming to be from the companies’ corporate offices.

The suspect called Bruegger’s Bagels, at 8340 W. Blue Mound Road, Wauwatosa, on April 29 and claimed to be “Mark Stein” from the company’s corporate offices, according to a subpoena for phone records.

The man told employees that a woman left her wallet in the store and that when she returned, $1,500 was missing. He then asked employees to deliver $1,500 to a person in the parking lot of a McDonald’s at N. 25th and W. Wisconsin Ave.
