A company accused of supplying halal burgers containing pork to schools across the city has said independent tests have revealed it has done nothing wrong.

Leicester City Council withdrew a lamb burger supplied to 19 schools by Doncaster-based Paragon Quality Foods last month after it claimed that tests showed up to 50 per cent pork in a sample burger.

Leicester firm ESPO conducted the tests on behalf of the city council.

However, a spokesman for Paragon Quality Foods said today that results from an unnamed independent specialist showed that the burger did not contain any pork.

Stray showers possible this afternoon

The nice run of weather we’ve enjoyed thus far in May will continue for most of us today.  Skies will be mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 70′s this afternoon.  There is a slight chance that a few of us may see a passing shower – but otherwise today will be another fairly nice day and we can expect more of the same tomorrow.

Changes work into the region overnight Thursday and into the day Friday as a low pressure system and trailing cold front move through offering some light, widespread rain and a few isolated thunderstorms.  It will be cooler Friday too with highs in the mid 60′s.

For the weekend it looks like we’re in the lower 60′s Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds.  Saturday night a powerful cold front moves through and will make Sunday a chilly day… in

A fantastic reception from students and staff at two schools helped keep paralysed fund-raiser Claire Lomas’s spirits up on the second day of her 400-mile cycle ride.

Claire, who is using a specially-adapted bike, which she cycles with her hands, is cycling around England, visiting schools and other organisations to help inspire them to raise cash for Spinal Research and the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation.

Yesterday, on the second day of her challenge, she visited Humphrey Perkins School, in Barrow upon Soar, and English Martyrs School, in Beaumont Leys, Leicester.

She was greeted by waves of cheering students at each school and said: “It’s fantastic to get such a great reception.

A past report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project shows that older adults have enthusiastically embraced social media tools. Now comes new research indicating that social media and online communities can provide valuable support for elderly patients in managing their health. Consumer Affairs reports:

“For me, it was interesting to learn that there is evidence for a large potential of social media in clinical practices,” said [Dr. Anja Leist of the University of Luxembourg]. “Older adults can use social media to access health-related information and engage in patient-to-patient-doctor conversations. A cold wind howls off a chilly Lake Erie

Just a nasty day on tap with periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms.  It’s going to be windy and cold with highs in the mid-40′s and winds out of the east gusting to 35MPH – windchills will be in the 30′s most of the day.

Widespread showers will begin to taper off overnight with lows near 40 degrees by daybreak Friday morning.  We will start to dry things out Friday afternoon and should see some partial clearing late in the day after a high in the upper 40′s.

For the weekend some sunshine finally returns!  Skies will be partly sunny Saturday, but it will be chilly with highs in the mid 40′s and pretty stiff winds out of the west.  Sunday is the nicest day of the weekend with some sunshine and more seasonable highs – in the upper 50′s.

Rain and thunderstorms return for most of next week, beginning with a wet communte Monday morning.
