MONTPELIER, VT — Some of the leaders of Vermonts independent colleges didnt appreciate President Barack Obamas recent comments about the need for colleges and universities to keep their costs down.

In his State of the Union speech and other recent remarks, Obama said he would support tying federal aid to colleges to the schools willingness to keep tuition costs down.

At a news conference Friday to announce a new exchange program and results of a study of the colleges economic impacts, several college presidents objected to Obamas comments.

The schools presidents say theyre working to keep costs down. But they also say that given the likelihood of a college degree boosting lifelong earnings, a college education is still the best investment a person can make in him- or herself.
