Con man hitting Wauwatosa businesses
Wauwatosa police are investigating a con man who has called at least six area businesses and tried to trick employees into handing over money by claiming to be from the companies’ corporate offices.
The suspect called Bruegger’s Bagels, at 8340 W. Blue Mound Road, Wauwatosa, on April 29 and claimed to be “Mark Stein” from the company’s corporate offices, according to a subpoena for phone records.
The man told employees that a woman left her wallet in the store and that when she returned, $1,500 was missing. He then asked employees to deliver $1,500 to a person in the parking lot of a McDonald’s at N. 25th and W. Wisconsin Ave.
According to the subpoena, Wauwatosa police are investigating five similar cases that occurred between March 27 and May 8.
The man was successful in getting at least $1,200 from an employee of Trade Secret on 2500 N. Mayfair Road on April 18. The employee delivered the money to a man in the McDonald’s parking lot on N. 25th St. and W. Wisconsin Ave.
Police did not return calls Tuesday requesting information on whether the suspect has been caught.
