Man gets 25-year sentence in slaying, sex assault
A man free on bail for pending child-assault charges when he committed two other felonies last year was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for strangling one woman and sexually assaulting and choking another.
Mario Pineda-Gaeta, 37, pleaded no contest in April to second-degree reckless homicide in the death of Lucy Wilbrandt, whose body was found partially clothed and bruised in an alley in the 1500 block of S. 21st St. early May 30, 2010.
Investigators tied him to the homicide last October after matching DNA found on Wilbrandt’s body to a sample taken from Pineda-Gaeta after he was arrested in another attack in June, about a month after Wilbrandt was strangled.
He was charged with choking his brother-in-law’s girlfriend into unconsciousness and sexually assaulting her.
Pineda-Gaeta already was awaiting sentencing in a yet another case when he was arrested.
Four days after Wilbrandt was killed, Pineda-Gaeta pleaded guilty to one count of false imprisonment in connection with a July 2009 incident in which he inappropriately touched two of his daughter’s friends, ages 8 and 9, according to a criminal complaint.
Pineda-Gaeta originally was charged with two counts of child enticement and two counts of attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child, but he pleaded guilty to the reduced charge, court records show. He was sentenced in December to three years in prison.
Pineda-Gaeta was out of custody on $500 bail in the case involving his daughter’s friends when Wilbrandt was killed and his brother-in-law’s girlfriend was assaulted, according to court records.
Pineda-Gaeta also pleaded no contest in April to the assaults on his brother-in-law’s girlfriend. He was sentenced to consecutive five-year prison terms, which were also consecutive to the 15-year prison term Circuit Judge Dennis Cimpl imposed for the reckless homicide.
Cimpl also imposed a total of 20 years of supervised release and ordered restitution of nearly $6,500.
