Rowdy July Fourth party broken up in south Sacramento; officers use Taser on 2
About 20 CHP officers, sheriff’s deputies and Sacramento police officers had to break up what law enforcement officials said was a rowdy Fourth of July party in south Sacramento.
Before the show of force by the officers was over, a Taser was used on two people, deputies said.
The night’s events began when a resident complained to the Sheriff’s Department that someone was using illegal fireworks in the 4500 block of 28th Avenue. The patrol officers who responded did not see or hear any illegal fireworks, but noted a large crowd blocking street access.
The sheriff’s unit asked the California Highway Patrol to remedy the street access. Shortly after 11 p.m., the CHP requested help from the Sheriff’s Department. At 11:14 p.m., officers and deputies assembled down the street. Before moving in, they received information that beer cans and lighted M-80s were thrown at a CHP unit.
The assembled officers then advanced on an estimated 100 to 150 people attending the party. Public announcements were made, the party was declared an unlawful assembly, and people were ordered to disperse.
“People did not do that,” said Deputy Jason Ramos, Sacramento County sheriff’s spokesman. “So some of the officers got out of their cars, repeating the announcements to disperse. The crowd was unruly and they were verbally challenging officers.”
The Taser was used on at least two people, a father and son, residents of the party house, who were then arrested, Ramos said.
Shawn Patrick Asberry, 40, and Shawn Patrice Asberry, 23, were arrested on suspicion of refusing to disperse, resisting officers and disorderly conduct while drunk in public. The younger Asberry was also arrested on suspicion of urging a riot. Richard Plant, 35, also was arrested on suspicion of refusing to disperse and for obstructing a police command, according to Ramos.
“It was definitely a volatile situation,” said Ramos.
