TVA v. Hill
Court U.S. Supreme Court
Date decided June 15, 1978
Appealed from United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit

The construction of the Tellico Dam would endanger the life of a newly designated as endangered fish species know as snail darter (perch).

Tennessee Valley Authority has received Congressional funds to construct the dam in Tennessee.

Congress had to balance the need for rural economic development versus species protection.

The majority of the Court ruled that the dam construction must halt.

Congress had to amend the Engendered Species Act to allow exemptions for projects with significant value to the public.
